STATE OF THE INDUSTRY

We have heard and understand your concerns as the film industry experiences a contraction in production levels. The steady rise in projects brought to our province since our membership boom in 2016 has meant that many members have not experienced the cyclical nature of our industry, but it is, a normal ebb and flow of production.

Factors that have played a part in this downturn are recent measures undertaken by some major studios that have restructured, merged, and pivoted their business models in order to cut costs and streamline their operations. Compounding this matter, on the labour side, is the upcoming Writers Guild of America and the Producer’s (AMPTP) contract negotiations set for March 20th, as their current film and TV contract expires on May 1, 2023.  Immediately following this are the SAG/AFTRA and Directors Guild of America negotiations, as both those contracts expire June 30, 2023.

As a result of these upcoming negotiations, the Local is encouraging Members to be diligent, prepared, and to set money aside should any of these groups experience delays or contentious bargaining with the AMPTP in the coming months.  It is important to keep in mind that proposals have yet to be exchanged and it is far too premature to predict potential strike action or what effect it may have on our work.

Teamsters Local Union No. 155 wants you to know that we are in constant communication with our producing partners, studios and industry stakeholders on the latest developments. There continues to be a steady stream of script breakdowns at Creative BC, along with open dialogue and commitment from Producers to bring work to our province.

The Local is committed to supporting you, and during this period we highly encourage you to increase your skills and employment opportunities by taking advantage of ongoing training, attaining new tickets and certifications or updating expired ones.
