Following the email update to Members May 5th on the recent U.S. tariff announcement, IATSE International and the IBT have made statements. Although we are disappointed in these communications, and know that many members feel the same, the Local Union wants to reassure you that we are working diligently on this issue. Communications with Teamsters Canada and other Local Unions has been positive and supportive.
The proposed tariffs are vague and would be extremely difficult to implement in our global, integrated industry. These measures could have serious negative impacts on production everywhere, including in the US. At this time, existing tariffs do not apply to services such as the production of Film and Television and there is a World Trade Organization moratorium on digital goods until 2026.
The White House and President have already walked back the comments, saying “no final decision on foreign film tariffs have been made”. There have been ongoing discussions with local, Provincial and Federal Governments. The Local will continue to advocate with all parties and monitor the situation closely. Please know that we are proceeding with caution and business as usual.
We will continue to keep you informed as this develops.
